PNG is a format built for accuracy over compression, which is exactly why it's the right choice for screenshots, diagrams, line art, and anything with sharp edges or transparency. It's not always the right choice, though: for photo-heavy pages, a compressed JPG usually gives a smaller file with no visible difference. A few things affect how usable your PNGs are once you've decided PNG is the right call:
For print, use high quality and keep resolution above what you'd need on screen, PNGs downscale cleanly but don't upscale well without visible quality loss.
Turn on transparency only if you actually need a see-through background, like for overlays or icons. For photos or scanned pages, a solid background keeps file sizes smaller.
